IMAGINEERING INSPIRES YOUNG WOMEN AT UNIVERSITY EVENT

An Imagineering team took part in a special event at Coventry University promoting engineering to young women.

Imagination in action
Getting to grips with construction
Yes - engineering IS fun!

Imagineering recently took part in a special event organised by Coventry University, Young Women into Engineering. Over thirty Year 8 girls from two Warwickshire secondary schools – Aylesford School, Warwick and Bablake School, Coventry – spent a lively morning at the event taking part in a Vehicle Build Challenge organised by Imagineering, with help from students from Coventry University. In teams of two, the girls designed, constructed and tested a vehicle made from K’Nex and powered by a reversible motor unit, operated on batteries. They had specifications to meet and their vehicles were required to run in a straight line as well as up and down slopes and over a bridge. Prizes were awarded, including for teamwork, and all the teams produced a vehicle.
Many organisations, including manufacturers, are now recognising the wealth of talent to be found amongst female students and to actively attract and develop that ability and create more engineers of the future. And many are also arranging special events like that at Coventry to inspire girls to consider a career in engineering and technology.
Bob Shanks, Imagineering’s Chairman, said: “This is the second year we have partnered Coventry University in this event and it has proved very rewarding. The girls demonstrated creative imagination, aptitude, skills and enthusiasm. Young women have traditionally not been attracted to careers in this sector but that is beginning to change. Events like this help to demonstrate that engineering and technology can be fun as well as providing a rewarding career – and dispelling any ideas about glass ceilings for young women in this sector”
